Fat Tuesday Has Arrived!
I bet you didn’t know “Mardi Gras” is French for Fat Tuesday. We all know Mardi Gras is a huge celebration and a ton of parades with masked dancers and flashing women and of course you can’t forget the purple, black and gold beads, they’re everywhere. And you probably know that Fat Tuesday is a day dedicated to feasting on all your favorite goodies and partying the day and night away, but many don’t know the reasoning behind this. What exactly is Fat Tuesday? It’s the practice of indulging in all of the foods the last night before you give them up and begin the fasting of the Lenten season, which starts on the following day: Ash Wednesday.
Over the years the holiday has included not only Catholics but all religions and people and Fat Tuesday has become such a huge celebration for New Orleans, that visitors from all cities and states flock to New Orleans to celebrate the feasting day each year! Today, feasting is not the only practice that takes place, popular partying practices include wearing decorative masks and costumes, dancing, wearing as many beads as can fit on your neck and taking in as many parades as possible.
